Brand Background & Philosophy

Established in 1916 by Gus Ackerman in Wynberg, Cape Town, Ackermans has grown into one of South Africa’s most trusted value retailers. With over a century of experience, the brand has consistently focused on providing affordable, quality clothing and essentials to families across Southern Africa. Now a part of the Pepkor Group, Ackermans operates more than 850 stores in six countries, including Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, and Zambia.

Ackermans’ core philosophy, “Bringing Value to Life,” underscores its commitment to offering customers not just products, but meaningful value that enhances their daily lives. This ethos is reflected in the brand’s dedication to affordability, quality, and accessibility. By understanding the financial pressures faced by many families, Ackermans strives to ensure that every customer can access stylish and durable clothing without compromising on quality.

The brand places significant emphasis on its people, referring to its employees as “Phadimas,” meaning “shine” in Northern Sotho. This term embodies the company’s belief in nurturing talent and fostering a supportive work environment where employees are encouraged to excel and contribute meaningfully to the brand’s success.

Ackermans has also been recognized for its excellence in customer satisfaction. In 2015, it was rated the second-best clothing store by the South African Consumer Satisfaction Index.  The brand’s commitment to customer-centricity is evident in its diverse product offerings, which include clothing for women, men, children, and babies, as well as homeware, cellular products, and financial services.

In recent years, Ackermans has embraced digital transformation to enhance its operations and customer experience. By implementing Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, the company has streamlined its buying processes, improved communication with suppliers, and increased efficiency in product development.

Through its unwavering dedication to value, quality, and community, They continues to solidify its position as a leading retailer in Southern Africa, committed to enriching the lives of its customers and employees alike.

Project with Eton

Since 2015, Eton has partnered with Ackermans to support its mission of delivering affordable, high-quality fashion to families across Southern Africa. Recognizing the brand’s emphasis on value and quality, Eton collaborated closely with Ackermans’ design and merchandising teams to produce garments that meet the expectations of their diverse customer base.

Eton’s role encompassed the end-to-end production process, from interpreting design concepts to manufacturing and quality assurance. By leveraging its expertise in efficient production methods and supply chain management, Eton ensured that Ackermans’ products were not only stylish and durable but also aligned with the brand’s affordability standards.

A key aspect of this collaboration was the focus on children’s and women’s apparel, areas where Ackermans has established a strong market presence. Eton’s ability to deliver consistent quality at scale enabled Ackermans to expand its offerings and maintain its reputation for value-driven fashion.

Throughout the partnership, Eton remained responsive to Brands’ evolving needs, adapting to changes in consumer preferences and market dynamics. This agility ensured that Ackermans could continue to provide its customers with relevant and appealing products season after season.

The ongoing collaboration between Eton and Ackermans exemplifies a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and customer satisfaction, reinforcing both brands’ positions as leaders in the value retail space.
